Grandparents Day
Grandparents Day
A message from Pope Francis
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
“His mercy is from age to age” (Lk 1:50). This is the theme of the Third World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly (23/7/23), and it takes us back to the joyful meeting between the young Mary and her elderly relative Elizabeth (cf. Lk 1:39-56) God wants young people to bring joy to the hearts of the elderly, as Mary did to Elizabeth, and gain wisdom from their experiences.
To better appreciate God’s way of acting, let us remember that our life is meant to be lived to the full, and that our greatest hopes and dreams are not achieved instantly but through a process of growth and maturation, in dialogue and in relationship with others. Those who focus only on the here and now, on money and possessions, on “having it all now”, are blind to the way God works!
I would invite you to make a concrete gesture that would include grandparents and the elderly. Let us not abandon them. Their presence in families and communities is a precious one, for it reminds us that we share the same heritage and are part of a people committed to preserving its roots.
Dear grandparents, dear elderly brothers and sisters, may the blessing of the embrace between Mary and Elizabeth come upon you and fill your hearts with peace. With great affection, I give you my blessing.
Pope FRANCIS

St Joseph’s Grandparent’s Day
Year 2 and Mrs James organised yet another memorable event at St Joseph’s. Last Thursday we celebrated Grandparents Day with our much loved Grandparents. Thank you Year 2 for putting so much love and care into the Liturgy to help our Grandparents feel special.
When we advertised that we had our own Picasso’s, we weren’t joking! We had a gallery of Grandparent portraits that would even impress Margaret Olley. We know our own resident artist, Mrs Larkin was super proud, and our Grandparents were over the moon with the finished product.
A great afternoon was had by all!
Happy Grandparents Day!

PRIMARY ELECTIVE SPORT!!
This Term for School Sport on Fridays, students in years 3 -6 will be asked to choose their top 4 sports from the list provided. “One” being their first choice, through to “four” being their last choice. I will do my best to allocate students their top preferences with Yr6 getting priority as this is their last year to participate in Elective Sport. All four sports are fantastic and students will enjoy their experience regardless of what sport they are assigned to.
This Term we plan to welcome a professional coach from AFL to our school to teach us all the fun components of AFL. Kinder and Year 1 will enjoy lessons once a week on Fridays, similar to the way Dance Fever conducted their sessions. Years 3 – 6 may choose AFL as part of their Elective Sport for Term 3. This is the only sport that is free of charge thanks to the Sporting Schools Grant and also the only sport that is based at school, saving the walk into town!
1) The Murwillumbah Combat Club is excited to offer Kickboxing to the students of St Joseph’s Primary School in Term 3. This exciting sport is a fun and dynamic striking art that builds fitness, strength, coordination, and flexibility. In conjunction with conditioning exercises, partner drills and fun kickboxing games, students will learn basic striking techniques, footwork, blocking and movement with a variety of training tools including punching bags, mitts, thai pads, shields and will get to train in a real boxing ring. This activity is offered at beginner level and is non-contact.
Cost: $7 per session – 6 sessions (total: $42 for 6 sessions)
2) Envision Gym: This fantastic Gym is located opposite KFC in town. After speaking to Guy (owner / operator) he assures me that there will be lots of exciting ideas planned for the students who select “Gym” for their Elective Sport! Activities will range from a Ninja Warrior style climbing frame, rowing machine, a digital interactive workout room, treadmill, rock wall and much more!
Cost: $7 per session – 6 sessions (total: $42 for 6 sessions)
3) Hoopla Circus: Suzie’s Hoopla Circus is a fun, high energy circus session where you learn a mixture of gymnastics and circus skills! Her equipment ranges from the floor length trampoline (to help get the height you need for flips and tricks) to the volt, silks, stilts, juggling tools and the list goes on!
Cost: $7 per session – 6 sessions (total: $42 for 6 sessions)
4) AFL: I have had a lot of students asking for an opportunity to experience AFL, so with this in mind I have chosen AFL to be our free sports option through the Sporting Schools Grant. The coaches are looking forward to visiting St Joseph’s and sharing their passion, fun skills and games with us!
Cost: Free! – 6 sessions

Student Support Worker
Hi,
I’m Dannielle Salmon and I am the newest member of the Pastoral Care team. I am so honoured to come into such a wonderful school community where I have experienced respect and kindness from everyone I have met. I am a mother of 2 ridiculously cool kids and as a family we love going exploring, camping, swimming and having bbqs with family and friends. For the past 11.5 years I have been working alongside families at Centacare as a Child and Family Counsellor. I am so thankful and excited to be apart of this beautiful school community. Come and introduce yourself to me when you’re next walking past the Student Support Room, I’m here Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
See you soon.
