Term 3 Week 8- September 5th, 2023
From the Principals Desk
Dear Parents and Carers,
Week 8! Welcome to Book Week at St Joseph’s. The Book Fair is already a hub of excitement and activity. I’m hearing plenty of discussions about book character costumes and general enthusiasm toward everything books! This week is always a most enjoyable celebration of literacy. I am away at a principal gathering during this week and will unfortunately miss the Book Character Dress Up day on Wednesday, my loss! I hope everyone has a wonderful day. I wonder who the surprise characters will be in 2023??
Last week saw a cluster of events over the course of a few days. I sincerely thank those families who supported the students and school during the Year 4 Accendre evening, Year 3 Co-created Saints liturgy, Father’s day breakfast and liturgy, and then finally the Forum Fiesta Movie Night!
I also wish to express our gratitude to the numerous staff members and parents who gave of their time to organise and run the various events of last week. May I also express my congratulations to the students of Years 1, 3 and 4 for their successful contribution to the formation and celebration of these events. To all, well done!
Have a great week! Best of luck with the costume preparations!
Peace and blessings,
Jason Clarke

Sharing the Gospel
Over the last two weeks, there has been an abundance of sharing the Gospel. At St Joseph's we value being part of a Catholic school and enjoy every opportunity to share the Good News with each other and our community. The experiences were rich and faith-filled. Our hearts were tingling with joy as we looked around at the faces of the children, families, and staff who were examples of what it means to love others. Thank you for coming to these events and embracing each opportunity for our students to show you their best selves. May you find joy in each and every moment of your day. God Bless!
Catholic Schools Week - Attended by all Year 6 cohorts from the Tweed Catholic Schools. Mrs. Sidorko and our Year 6 students traveled to St. Anthony's, Kingscliff for a community Mass, lunch, and games. New friends were formed and memories were created.
Accendere Families - Year 4 and their families were together for an hour where the students shared the message, stories, and experiences of their Accendere retreat earlier in the term. This concluded with sharing a meal.
Called to be Saints Liturgy - For the first few weeks of this term Year 3 were engaged in learning about Catholic Saints - Who are they? What was their life like? How we are called to be saints today? They bought this learning together in a beautiful Liturgy that they co-created themselves and shared with their families and teachers.
Father's Day Breakfast & Liturgy - Our younger classes always put together wonderful Liturgies for the people they love. Our Father's Day Liturgy was one of these momentous occasions. Year 1 showed their dedication and love to their Dads and father figures with special prayers, songs, reflections, and stories. We hope all our Dads, Grandfathers, and father figures in our lives enjoyed their special day on Sunday.
Forum Fiesta Movie Night - A wonderful way to bring our week to a close. Fun, food, friends, and a movie. An enjoyable night was had by all.

LIVING BOOK TALK
As a part of our Book Week festivities, students from Years 3 to 6 had the privilege of attending a captivating Living Book presentation. The dynamic duo of Anna Duong and her daughter Nya, who is in year 6, served as our living books for the day.
Anna, the author of "An Ordinary Girl," shared the poignant tale of her own life, a true story recounting the harrowing journey of a refugee child by boat. Anna's personal journey involved enduring three days and nights in the pitch-black hull of a boat without access to food or water when she was just 8 years old. She also described the challenging period during which she had to rely on nothing but rice and sardines for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for an entire year.
During the presentation, Nya joined her mother to offer insights into the creative process behind the book and shared some clever techniques for illustrating. It was a remarkable narrative that showcased themes of survival, unwavering determination, tireless effort, and the enduring power of hope. Anna's story conveyed a multitude of valuable messages that resonated with all of us in attendance.
The presentation left a deep emotional impact on everyone present, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Anna and Nya for generously sharing their remarkable story with us.

STAGE THREE GALA DAY
Recently, Years 5 & 6 travelled to Arkinstall Park for the Stage Three Gala Day. All eight Catholic Schools from the Tweed Zone came together for a fun filled day of sport. Our school submitted a competitive netball team and a competitive mixed soccer team. These teams played against other competitive teams from the Tweed Zone in a tournament to determine the champion team/school to progress on to Diocesan for that sport. Thank you to Mr Jeffree and Mrs Sidorko for taking on the role of coach for each of these teams. We really appreciate your time, not just on the day but the training sessions they were able to provide leading up to the day. Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend and cheer on our teams – your support was greatly appreciated.
Our mixed soccer team played four games at a very competitive level with their first game ending in a win against Mt St Patrick’s. Our netball team played better and better with every game, supporting each other and never giving up. Their positive spirit made for a very enjoyable day and was a pleasure to watch them working so well together. It was wonderful to see the new soccer and netball uniforms being worn with such pride – our teams looked fantastic on and off the field/court!
Students who were not part of the competitive tournament were split into four groups and rotated around to four different sporting activities throughout the day. Each group was made up of students from the eight catholic schools within the Tweed Zone. It was a great way to start making new friendships leading into high school all while building on skills in Tennis, Netball, AFL, and NFL Flag!
ELECTIVE SPORT
Only two more sessions left of our Primary Elective Sport! Just a reminder that if you haven’t finalized payment for your child’s Elective Sport, please do so as soon as possible. We hope the students enjoy their final few weeks of Elective Sport –I know the coaches have thoroughly enjoyed delivering their programs.
NFL FLAG GALA DAY
This Friday, at Arkinstall Park, St Joseph’s will be sending an NFL Flag team to compete in a gala day. Good luck to our Stage 3 team: Blake Stuart, Zilli Hatton, Caleb Bourke, Kody Smith, Ethan Donatini, Oskar Buckroyd, Damon Woodward, Daniel Hoffman, Zac Stuart, Max Bourke and Fynn Bloomfield. We look forward to hearing all about the day.
HOCKEY IN PE
Students in Kinder through to Year 6 have been developing fantastic skills in Hockey over the past three weeks. We have one week left of Hockey then we move on to T-ball skills (batting, base running and using our new leather gloves for catching and throwing). Well done to all the students; learning Hockey is a tricky sport to master but the skill development I have seen over the past three weeks has been outstanding!
