    From The Principals Desk

    Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to school for Term 4!

I hope that everyone had a nice break away from the rigours of school life and everyone is ready for another positive and rewarding final term of 2024.

It is at this time of the year the looming expectation of high school becomes very real for our Year 6 students, we wish them well throughout their final weeks of Primary School and look forward to a memorable final term, continuing their positive leadership and mentoring to the younger students.

    Year 5 Leadership Day

Our Year 5 students have participated in their final leadership day today. They have had another fantastic day of exploring the skills and attributes it takes to successfully lead through service to others. Having spoken with the students today regarding their aspirations for formal leadership opportunities, I am sure that they feel confident that they are all worthy of fulfilling the various leadership roles within the school next year. I look forward to their nomination letters and their collective leadership next year.

    Year 3 Parent Teacher interviews

A reminder that our postponed Year 3 Parent Teacher Interviews are taking place today and Thursday.

    Teaching Attendance

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves. Help your child to learn that going to school on time, every day is important.

Reinforcing the idea that attending school regularly is crucial for a positive school experience. Foster a love for learning by encouraging your child's natural curiosity.

Help your child to see school as a place to explore new ideas, discover interests, and develop a lifelong passion for learning. Foster positive social connections at school by encouraging friendships. Knowing that they have friends to look forward to can motivate children to attend school regularly.

    Writing Professional Learning

At our recent Professional Learning Day, teachers focused on improving our approach to writing instruction and ensuring consistent, accurate teacher judgment in assessing students' work. The day was dedicated to refining our writing practices and moderating students’ writing to align with high standards.

We believe that providing teachers with ongoing opportunities to collaborate and strengthen their skills is crucial for supporting student growth. The moderation process helps ensure that teachers’ assessments are consistent across the school, allowing us to better understand each child’s progress and provide tailored support.

By deepening our understanding of writing development and aligning our judgments, we can help all students become more confident and capable writers. We are excited about the impact this professional learning will have on our students’ writing journeys. Thank you for your continued support!

    Sports News

    PRIMARY SWIMMING PROGRAM:

The Primary Swimming Program begins next week (Week 3) and runs for five consecutive Fridays.  Students in years 3-6 will walk to the pool every Friday to take part in a 30min swim safety session.  The focus will be on safe water behaviours and practices.  Always a great reminder leading into summer and living in the Northern Rivers.  Thanks to the Sporting Schools Grant we have been able to reduce the cost for both the Primary and Infants swimming!

Please ensure permission and payment of $35 is complete ready for next Friday’s first session!

    INTENSIVE SWIMMING – INFANTS:

This term, students in Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 will participate in the Intensive Swimming Program which begins in week 6 and will run every day for two weeks (excluding Fridays).  This 30min swim lesson is a great way to build water confidence, technique and strength with their classmates leading into the summer period.  Permission and payment will be sent closer to the start date.

SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL – SAVE THE DATE!

Our School Swimming Carnival is set for Thursday 5th December – week 8 and will be held at TRAC in the 50m outdoor pool in Murwillumbah.  There will be races for both competitive (50m races) and non-competitive (25m races) to ensure there is something for everyone!

COLOUR RUN – SAVE THE DATE!

Another date to put down in the calendar is our end of year St Joseph’s Colour Run!!  Friday 13th December – week 9 is our annual colour run!

If there are any families who can supply large tyres or know someone I can contact regarding borrowing large tyres please let me know by contacting the office or emailing me directly at: samantha.daly@lism.catholic.edu.au

    SUMMER SPORTS TRIALS:

Nominations have just closed for students in Years 4 and 5 who play the following sport at a high level:  Tennis, Basketball, Touch Football, Cricket and Softball.  It is not too late to register your interest but I will have to go in and sign the student up at this stage so please reach out if you would like your child entered either by contacting the office or emailing me directly at: samantha.daly@lism.catholic.edu.au

Each school is allowed to send six students to Zone trials (6 boys and 6 girls) in each of the above sports.  I met with interested students last week to record nominations and help them with the online process.  The only group that requires a school trial, is the Girls Touch Football.  Trials will take place this Friday at lunchtime for the girls touch.  Zone trials will be in week 4 after school – a note has gone home to students involved in these trials.  School, Zone and Diocesan trials will take place this term with Polding taking place early Term 1 of next year; this is why the trials are only open to Years 4 & 5 as Year 6 students will be in high school.
