Term 2 Week 7 - June 6th, 2023
From the Principals Desk
Dear Parents and Carers,
Week 7 already! Praying for fine weather for our Athletics carnival on Thursday!
School Photos Tomorrow - Wednesday 7th June
Our school photos will begin at 8.10am with sibling photos in the assembly room. These will be followed by the staff photo and School Leaders (Captains, Sports Captains and Student Disciples) at 8.45am. Class photos and individual photos, from kinder to year 6, will follow.
Please ensure that all students arrive punctually and are in correct day uniform, from appropriate hair ties to correct socks and shoes. We will try our best to keep them looking as sharp as they did when they left home until they’re smiling at the camera! Year 6 need to also remember their specially designed Year 6 shirt as well.
Athletics Carnival Thursday 8th June - Walter Peate Oval Cudgen
We are praying for fine weather on Thursday! The forecast is looking better each day, so we are also looking for another family invited and supported event at Cudgen. The students are excited and once again will need to be punctual on the day as buses will be leaving soon after the morning bell. We may have time for a parent-teacher-student relay at the end if anyone is keen!
Public Speaking Competition nominations due this Friday
Our optional Public Speaking Competition nominations are due this Friday! I commend those students who have displayed such enthusiasm to enter. This is truly a life-long skill if it can be experienced and mastered at a young age. We are looking forward to hearing some great speeches over the coming weeks!
Parent Forum Meeting next Tuesday evening!
Have a great week and enjoy the long weekend! Our thoughts and prayers are with the students who are making their First Holy Communion this weekend!
Peace and blessings,
Jason Clarke

Social Justice is Alive at St Joseph's
It was a great experience to see the full circle of social justice led by our Mini Vinnies team this term. It all started back at Minyma when every child worked with Mrs Sidorko to establish the items they wanted to purchase for the less fortunate in Murwillumbah during the Winter Appeal. The Mini Vinnies team headed full throttle into their fundraising mission. With $850 worth of much needed items purchased the Mini Vinnies team presented Mrs Banner (President Mary MacKillop Conference for St Vincent de Paul Society Murwillumbah) with these supplies at Assembly on Friday.
Mrs Banner was delighted and was deeply moved by the generosity of our small community.
We wish to thank you all again for being the head, heart, and hands of Jesus for so many. You are a most generous community, thank you!
GOD MOMENT
When the Year 4 girls come in to help their teachers each morning.
Their willingness to give of their time is appreciated.
Year 4 - Launch into Learning
Mrs Quinn & Year 4 launched into learning about the Mass in an unconventional way.
The students were invited to share a meal and draw links to the topic of the Mass and the Eucharist. The discussion was rich and enthusiastic. We look forward to seeing where your learning takes you Year 4.

DISCUS EVENT DURING PE:
Last Thursday during PE students competed in the Discus event for the Athletics Carnival. Due to time restraints, this event is held leading up to the carnival. Ribbons were presented the following day and the measurements will be submitted to the Tweed Zone sports committee to determine the two top throwers out of the following age categories: Junior (8Yrs, 9Yrs & 10Yrs combined), 11Yrs and Senior (12Yrs & 13Yrs combined). St Joseph’s Murwillumbah is the only school that measures students for this event however, students can submit a measurement if they have one recorded through Little Athletics. Once the top two throwers have been determined for each age category for the Tweed Zone (the 8 catholic schools in our Tweed Zone) I will announce the results. If any of our students at St Joseph’s qualify as the top two in their age category, they will progress straight to Diocesan in this event which is in Coffs Harbour on Tuesday 15th August.
1500m RACE:
The 1500m race was held last Thursday after school with an amazing turnout! I am so impressed with the number of students who wanted to participate simply to earn points for their house, such great school spirit! Ribbons were awarded last Friday during eating time at lunch to the students who placed 1st, 2nd & 3rd in their age group.
A special congratulations to the following students who are now progressing to Zone in two weeks time (Tuesday 20th June, 3.30pm at Cudgen):
Junior (8yr, 9yr & 10yr combined): Misha Reed, Sam Stovold, Ruby Carter and Imogen Rudman
11Yr: Max Bourke, Caleb Bourke, Ava Hunt and Indi Asanuma
Senior (12yr & 13yr combined): Zac Stuart, Kody Smith and Asha Pahlow
RECORD BREAKERS FOR DISCUS AND 1500M!!
We’ve had some amazing results with new records being set in both the 1500m and Discus! Congratulations to the following record breakers:
Discus: Corey Bray broke an 18yr old record, Amelia Bedser broke a 12yr old record, Esther Cambridge broke a 9yr old record and Violet Williams broke an 8yr old record!!
1500m: William Polson, Sam Stovold, Ruby Carter, Misha Reed, Imogen Rudman, Max Bourke, Ava Hunt and Zac Stuart all broke records previously held by students from 2022. These records only started last year as it is an event recently added to the Athletics program. The new times set were so fast I’m not sure if they will be broken anytime soon! Well done to our amazing record breakers!!
200m: After double checking records from last year’s carnival (in preparation for this year) I noticed that Misha Reed actually broke the 200m - 9yr boys record which stood for 18yrs!! Congratulations Misha, your result has been added to the school records and is such an impressive time, it could possibly stand for another 18yrs!
SCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL:
The School Athletics carnival is fast approaching (this Thursday 8th June)! We are only waiting on 24 students to be given consent for this event. Please complete the Compass consent as soon as
possible if you have not done so already. Please remember to pack warm clothes as there may be a few showers throughout the day. We are looking forward to a great day of competition and school spirit!
